Introduction
Hello, I’m Pearlynne Leong.
After over 30 years of tutoring, my journey has brought me full circle to math education, where I now serve as a Math and Life Transformation Specialist.
In this role, I act as a guiding light, embracing the responsibility to restore dignity, rebuild shattered confidence, and change the trajectory of individuals’ lives through math and numbers.
The Original Singapore Math
I was born and raised as a third-generation Singaporean and have been residing in Canada for over 30 years.
Growing up in Singapore, I attended Methodist Girls’ School, a well-known missionary school where I was taught Singapore Math by a team of highly skilled and dedicated teachers. Over more than a decade of formative education, I accumulated a treasure trove of invaluable tips, secrets, and strategies that shaped my approach to learning math.
Beyond the classroom, I also received extra guidance from a math tutor in Singapore, who played a key role in sharpening my problem-solving skills and deepening my understanding of mathematical concepts. Through this rich learning experience, I had the privilege of mastering the purest form of mathematics—the original Singapore Math—now recognized worldwide as the gold standard.
As a pioneer in math education, I’m committed to sharing the wealth of knowledge and skills I’ve gathered over the decades. My goal is to make math approachable, easy to learn, and stress-free, empowering the next generation to not only master mathematical concepts but also develop confidence and a love for problem-solving.
The Story of Kimberley
During my university days, I had the opportunity to work with Kimberley, whose father, an architect, hired me to tutor her. At that time, Kimberley was barely passing Grade 11 math but aspired to become a Pediatrician.
Despite our numerous sessions together, her math grades fluctuated and eventually settled at a 50% margin, which was insufficient for her to apply to college or university. Sadly, she had to give up her dream.
This weighed heavily on me. I felt helpless and wished I had known how to do more. It was a tragic loss, as Kimberley’s genuine love for children and nurturing spirit would have made a positive and significant impact on our community.
Becoming a Teacher
For some time, I struggled with the shame of failing Kimberley and shied away from tutoring.
Eventually, through a series of life events, I was led to pursue a second degree in Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC), embarking on my journey to become a teacher.
During my time tutoring students, even as a teacher, I encountered similar challenges. By the time these students came to me for tutoring, they were already battling issues with their relationship with math and their self-esteem. They not only loathed math, but their confidence had plummeted. Some even abhorred the sight of numbers, vowing never to engage with math again.
Witnessing these struggles reminded me of Kimberley and deepened my sense of helplessness. At one point, I even contemplated giving up teaching altogether due to the recurring challenges I faced.
The Quest for a Solution Began
One rainy November evening, while sitting at a local café and sipping on my mocha latte, I found myself completely lost in thought as I journaled about my challenges. “There has to be a better way,” I kept mulling over.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a little voice whispered, “Why not combine your training in Singapore Math with your teaching experience at UBC to create something new?”
In that instant, a light bulb went off. Why not? Feeling hopeful, I began experimenting with my students. Within a short time, their math grades improved—some even jumped 1 to 2 letter grades in just 4 months! The students felt less stressed, and their confidence and mental health saw a remarkable boost.
As their self-esteem soared, it even spilled over into other subjects, creating a positive domino effect. I was so relieved and excited to witness this incredible progress. This was the birth of Simplicity Counts™ Math.
The Simplicity Counts™ Math
Simplicity Counts™ Math is a powerful, effective, and innovative program designed to strengthen students' math foundations, boost their confidence, and restore their self-esteem in as little as 4 to 12 months*.
This program has helped countless students open academic and career doors they once thought were closed forever.
I’m deeply grateful to have mastered the art of transforming individuals like Kimberley, who struggled with math for so many years. By rebuilding their math foundations, I’ve seen countless individuals flourish in confidence and self-esteem, reclaim their dignity, and ignite the courage and strength to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
I honor the light in you.
